Alimta is a new drug where it has the characteristic of stopping the production of three specific enzymes. It is thought that these enzymes play an important role in the growth of mesothelioma cancer. Therefore by stopping these enzymes, Alimta interferes with the process that allows cancerous cells to spread and grow. Alimta is also called Pemetrexed.
Alimta is usually administered together with another drug such as cisplatin. These drugs are administered through the vein (intravenously). The side effects of Alimta can be relieved by the administration of folic acid, vitamin B12 and steroids.
Side effects of Alimta may include some of the following:
- A higher risk of infections
- Problems in breathing/Tiredness/Weakness
- Nausea and Vomiting
- Bruising /Bleeding
- Skin rash
- Sore mouth
